Fulham 1–1 Man United: Point gained or two lost?

Manchester United left Craven Cottage with a point after a late Matheus Cunha equalizer cancelled out Lisandro Martínez’s own goal. The result means the Manchester side have now taken five points from their opening five Premier League matches.

United created enough chances, but lacked efficiency

On paper, United’s attacking numbers were strong: 29 shots to Fulham’s 12, with an xG of 1.59 compared with Fulham’s 1.57. Yet the volume of shots did not translate into sustained attacking control or enough clear chances.

Bruno Fernandes struck the post in the first half, while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno made several important saves. The issue wasn’t simply creating chances; it was turning pressure into goals.

Cunha was United’s biggest attacking threat

Matheus Cunha was arguably United’s most dangerous attacker throughout the match. He was involved in several of their best attacking moments and eventually rescued United with an 89th-minute strike.

His equalizer was fortunate though, as the shot took a major deflection off David Affengruber. Cunha’s persistence, however, gave United something to show for their late pressure.

A goal that summed up Man United’s problems

Fulham’s opener in the 63rd minute came from a chaotic defensive sequence.

Calvin Bassey carried the ball forward before goalkeeper Senne Lammens dealt poorly with his effort. Martínez then inadvertently turned the loose ball into his own net.

It was an avoidable goal and highlighted United’s lack of composure in defence.

Carrick’s tactical problem

Michael Carrick’s side had plenty of possession and territory, but their attacking play often became predictable.

United could move the ball into dangerous areas, but Fulham were able to defend their penalty area for long periods. When United needed greater urgency after going behind, the response only really came in the final stages.

That is probably the biggest concern for Carrick: United are producing numbers, but the performances aren’t consistently translating into control and results.

Fulham will feel they missed an opportunity

For Álvaro Arbeloa, this was another encouraging performance without the first Premier League victory of his tenure.

Fulham competed well, created dangerous moments and were only denied the three points by a late deflection. Their goalkeeper Leno was particularly important during United’s strongest spells.

The Cottagers can take confidence from the fact that they were able to frustrate the Red Devils despite being heavily outshot.

The bigger picture for Manchester United

The draw extends Michael Carrick’s difficult start. They have one league win from five matches, and this was their third consecutive Premier League match without victory.

The encouraging part is that United are creating opportunities and eventually found a way back into the game.

The concern is that 29 shots producing only one goal, combined with defensive errors and periods of low intensity, suggests that Carrick still has significant work to do during the international break.

Conclusion

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick

A 1-1 scoreline indicates a game Man United could have won, but also one they could easily have lost.

United’s attacking numbers suggest there is potential, but the performance exposed problems in finishing, defensive concentration and game management. Cunha’s late goal prevented another defeat, but it did not completely solve the underlying issues.

Man of the Match: Matheus Cunha, for his overall attacking involvement and the late equaliser. Senne Lammens was also top notch, as his saves prevented a truly embarassing day at the office for the men in red.
